Anna Sigríður SigurjónsdóttirCreatures of Rock and Iron
Anna Sigríður Sigurjónsdóttir is a child of the nature. She recently moved here from Denmark and now lives in a small house right by the coastline close to the small town of Grindavík. The art of Anna Sigríður reflects on her respect for Iceland and Icelandic nature. She uses almost exclusively raw materials from Iceland. The years she spent in Denmark she took the trouble of importing Icelandic rocks. She feels the power in the material and finds her roots connecting. What we perceive as totally unusable junk Anna Sigríður sees as gold and diamonds. She collects her gold and when she feels the time has come, she works amazing works of art out of the junk. She feels she can notice time in the material. Feeling the presence of ancient men and the struggle they had to endure. Anna Sigríður feels she connects with the material she works with in a deep genetic way. She forms various prehistoric living beings, looking like dinosaurs and some strange looking animals that are extinct but no doubt existed all those centuries ago. The finished art work are three dimensional sculptures, rocks surrounded by smooth iron that looks like it is flowing around the rocks making strong pieces that remind you of prehistoric living beings. Also she sculpts various symbols in flat stones that remind us of runes or mathematical symbols even though they are her imaginations. You can feel that she hears the creatures she makes and magically links them to time long since passed by. Anna Sigríður has studied art. First here in Iceland and then later in Holland. She has held a number of solo exhibitions and still more along with others dating back as far as 1984. Anna Sigríður was chosen to be the official town artist of Kópavogur in 1995 and her works are in the possession of numerous companies and public organizations.
